English as a second language (esl)
English as a Second Language (ESL) classes focus on improving the English speaking capacity of day workers so they can be successful at work and in their communities. Volunteer teachers prepare and deliver beginner and intermediate classes in contexts pertinent to the needs and interests of workers: workplace language, job skills, communicating with others, daily life, family, culture, and living in California and the United States.
In 2025, 196 ESL classes were held, with 1,249 students participating.
training
With the goal of creating new learning and job opportunities, workers have participated in trainings such as:
Cob building: Teaches essential building techniques, specifically using cob materials, a natural building material made from subsoil, water, straw, and sand.
Bike Repair Program: Teaches participants how to repair and maintain bicycles, covering skills such as fixing flat tires, adjusting brakes and gears, and general bike maintenance. Workers earned their certification and are able to provide this service.
Sustainable Gardening Program: Teaches participants eco-friendly gardening practices, including soil health management, composting, water conservation, and growing organic fruits and vegetables. Workers earned their certification and are able to provide this service.
Electric Tool Use Training: Through a grant, in partnership with the city of Mountain View’s sustainability department, the company AGZA implemented training on how to use and maintain electrical tools. Workers earned a certification at the end of the training. Employers can borrow the tools for the workers to use when they are hired for a minimum of 4 hours.
SEWING
Compañeros are able to develop their skills by creating a variety of handmade items, including tote bags, stuffed bunnies, dog clothing and accessories like scarves, hats, and more. The program not only provides valuable skill-building opportunities but also has the potential to generate income. For holidays we hold events for community members to purchase items made by workers with 100% of the profit going to them.
